The client required the full upgrade of the lighting from 1200mm fluorescent shatter proof lights as these were expensive to run and created replacement issues as the shatter proof lamps were becoming difficult to purchase and the units were constantly breaking down.
Their end clients, a number of leading supermarket chains were also requesting increased lighting levels throughout the packing shed. As a condition of an audit carried out by the controlling authority.
C&G recommended a conversion to lay in grid LED lighting panels, to reduce the running costs and maintenance down times and vastly improve the lighting levels throughout the packing shed a number of suppliers were approached and the light panels were purchased from NVC after a full design was submitted that meet the criteria.
The issues to be overcome:
Following an audit the client was issued with an improvement notice that had to be completed within four weeks.
C&G contacted NVC the next day and they attended the following day and had a scheme back to us within 48 hours this was submitted to the auditor and agreed by the end of the week.
The lights had to be changed at the end of the shift and as this needed to be completed mid-season which meant that the packing shed was not available until 8pm and had to be fully operational again by 6am the following morning.
We organised with NVC to have the lights delivered direct to site as storage was very limited, the engineers began installing as soon as the packing / cleaning was finished and the complete changeover was completed in one shift, along with a deep clean to ensure the environment remained sterile.
The audit requirement was satisfied with and overall increase in lighting levels of 23% & the new lighting scheme achieved a reduction of 69% in the overall running cost when compared to the original lighting installation.
The operators in the packing shed commented on the improved lighting scheme and how the improved lighting had greatly improved their work conditions.
All maintenance costs were eliminated & the production was uninterrupted, and no production was lost as a result of the lighting upgrade. The redundant lamps were disposed of by the LED panel supplier and the fittings also went to recycling via a registered contractor.
